    What is the right size of wire to use when finish a basement?

    Sorry you left way too much information out.

    For example, wire is sized by the amperage it needs to carry:

    #14 AWG = 15 amps. Usually needed for lights. #12 AWG =20 amps.

    So it depends on what you are going to use and are you running off your main panel or are you going to set up a sub panel?

    One other example, you use the following formula to calculate the minimum number of 15 amp lighting circuits you will need.

    3 VA* Square foot of basement/120 = total amps

    total amps/ 15 (amperage of light circuits) = # of circuits needed (It must be a whole number, so round up to the next highest whole number.

    Then you still have to size the number of outlets and branch circuits needed.

    If you are at all unsure of how to do this, you really need to be talking to a licensed electrician. The electrician can also pull the necessary permit (make sure the permit is in the electrician's name. If it is drawn in your name, then you are required to repair any errors the electrical inspector finds)
