    Tiling an existing shower pan
I have a plastic shower pan that has raised fiberglass/plastic lines about 1/2" wide for extra traction running towards the drain in a star pattern. This is the type of plastic pan that builders will put in and that you can buy a replacement at Home Deopt for around $150. We want to tile the shower pan (the walls are already tiled on 3 sides and has a glass door) and a home depot employee said that you can do it no problem. I asked if I needed to put a hardiboard down first and they said you can or you can put the thinset right on top of the plastic/fiberglass shower pan and then lay your tiles. Has anyone done this before? Can this be done? Any tips/suggestions/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    WORDS TO RUN FROM ;)

Unfortunately, no you cannot tile on it and no matter what you do to it will change that fact. I'm glad you asked here before going forward with that potentially disastrous advice.

The guys at HD actually get a small amount of training causing a small amount of knowledge. I am not bashing the box stores but you will get better advice here than HD. The plastic pan is likely acrylic and it flexes every time you step on it, crack goes the tile and grout. You can remove the pan with some wal damage and install a shower system like Schluter-KERDI-ST/-SC/-SR - Schluter-Systems. That old pan can be spruced up a bit with Rust-Oleums tub and tile paint if the fumes don't kill you.

If I'm retiling my shower, do I have to replace the pan, or can I just rough up the shower floor tile, and tile right over. I will definitely remove the wall tile, but the pan is fine and a lot of extra work.

I'm retiling my shower. Can I tile over the shower floor without removing the tile. I intend to remove the wall tile and replace backerboard, but I don't want to chip up the floor tile and replace the pan. Thanks
