    Criminal Record Check for Volunteer
I recently submitted a consent for disclosure of criminal record information to the school district in my town (BC Canada) so I can volunteer in my child's classroom. I just got a letter from the school district saying that it came back as police information regarding me may exist on police information retrieval system and that they cannot consider me until I take the form back to the station and confirm the nature of the info that exists.

I would like to say that I have never had a run in with the police, no fingerprinting, no arrests and no police car rides! But there was an incident almost 2 years ago:

I was shopping with my 3 year old son in a grocery store and didn't purchase 2 items that were sitting on top of my stroller. I was approached by the secret shopper upon leaving the store. This was an honest mistake which I explained to them. It was $14 worth in stuff. She checked the rest of my stroller and my diaper bag and of course found nothing else. I swear it was an honest mistake and I signed a paper saying that I wouldn't shop there for 6 months and was let go. I felt horrible and embarrassed. 2 years have almost gone by and I think this is what`may be haunting me!

What I would like to know is by going back to the station to confirm the nature of info that exists like the school district would like me to do... would it be digging up an old can of worms, or has this been so long that there will be no charges laid.

I also recently got my canadian passport with no problems and would like to know if when we go on holidays for 2 weeks to the US would this affect me crossing the boarder. I have crossed 4 times already with no problems.

I can't believe that this would cause such a thing as not being able to volunteer in my child's classroom.

Any and all information you can give me would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

    Hello c:

If the cops weren't called, there's NO police record, so your little shoplifting venture can't be it... Plus, since there was no arrest, crossing the border won't be problem either.

I'd be curious as to what your record DOES say.

Isn't there such thing as a private record where any outside party can submit information to the RCMP? Meaning the grocery store. Would this be what's turned up? I have done these record checks before and never had a problem. It did say may or may not exist but why all of a sudden this change when they ran my birthdate and name?

    Hello again, concerned:

Uhhh, no. That would make the RCMP criminal record database nothing more than a GOSSIP column.

Should I just go down there and find out what this is or leave it alone just in case?

    Hello again, concerned:

Well, if you're concerned enough to ask about it here, I'd think you'd be concerned enough to go down there.

But what if its still pending from 2 years ago and they've waited to press charges. I don't want to open a can of worms. If they insist on fingerprinting to do a full check I shouldn't be worried right because Ive never done them to begin with?
What are the other reasons that it came back as may or may not exist?

    For a $14 crime, you've gotten all I'm giving.
