Hi,I have an 11 week old bernese mountain dog whom we purchased at a pet store.He is having difficulty with pooping in his crate.We took him to the vet the day after we got him because he had runny diaherra with mucus and blood in it.The vet did a test on his poop and he had coccidia.He was treated for that for 5 days.We took him back after the five days for a follow up and the coccidia had been gone but then now he was loaded with worms.He has been treated for the worms(its been a week) and today he goes back to the vet for another check up.Unfortunately he still has very mucusy and sometimes a fair amount of blood in his stool.The problem isn't constant it may go away for a day and then it returns.I am sure that this bloody mucusy stools are the reason I can't seem yo get him to stop going poop in his crate.Any help anyone can give me would be so much appreciated I am starting to think I will never get him trained with this problem.I stay at home so I know he is getting lots of opportunity to go outside to potty and when he goes outside he does really well with it.He even knows the spot in the yard where he is to go.One of my questions is :when he poops in his crate in the night,should I clean it or leave it till morning.It seems he is just whinning to get me to come clean it instead of getting me up beofre he goes.I am starting to get frusturated,I know its not Jakes fault,but where do I go from here?. Thanks for any advice I receive... P.S... just to add Jake is not in anyway acting sickly at all.. he is very happy and playful and he eats and drinks very well.

I would clean it or else you'll have an entire dog that needs a bath in the morning! Have you tried setting the alarm to get up in the middle of the night and let him out? It sounds like he's having trouble controlling it and may need any extra potty break before morning.

It sounds like much of what you are doing is right. For some more details that may help see https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251809 Certainly working with the vet to clear up the cococcious and worms is the right thing to do. You won't get far until he has a normal stool. Continue to work with the vet. The grid I suggest in the sticky isn't near as effective with bowel movements.

Follow the usual recommendations, leaving him little more room than enough to stretch out in the crate. When you take him out for his last trip at night, be sure and walk him around enough to stimulate his bowels so he empties them completely. Most of my puppies have been able to make it through most nights by 11 weeks. Once you have cleared up all his problems, he should be able to also. For the next week, you may have to set the alarm for before he has been waking you up and take him out. You do want to stop him from fouling the crate before he loses his natural aversion to his own filth. It is very important to keep the crate clean.

Thank you learning and labman for your response,I'll post what the vet says after his appointment today.I am glad I stumbled upon this site I think it will be very helpful to me as we raise Jake.He is a great little guy and I really want to raise him with manners .

Hi I just wanted to update you all on Jake. He went to the vet again yesterday and the coccidia is gone and the worms are gone.. but now there is a new problem giardia.He is now getting treatment for that.I can't believe how many problems this dog has come to us with.It is getting very costly.Now I am worried and concerned,since they don't know if it can be transmitted from dog to human if my grandson or daughter may have gotten it.I know I will never buy another pet from a pet store,now I know why it is so shunned upon.Hopefully this will clear him up and he will feel like a healthy puppy.Thanks again everyone.

You need to take your medical bills to the pet store and show them what you have been through with this dog. I would also make a complaint with the Better Business Burea. Another thing you may be able to do is contact the humane society, surely the pet store needs a visit from them to insure that they are properly caring for these animals in their stores. Your post serves as a reminder to people, what pet stores are all about that sells puppies. Profit!

Both the giardia and hook worms can be transmitted to humans. I checked their site and found this, http://www.avma.org/services/Compend...tions_2006.pdf You may want to make sure the children wash their hands after petting the puppy. Also be careful to clean up its stools and wash your hands afterwards.

Rather than do a search on dog info, I prefer to go to sites I think I can trust. I have seen too much garbage on sites I know nothing about.
