I have a large collection of old music that is recorded on the old music cassette tapes. I have heard that it is possible to download these tapes to your PC. I have a COMPAQ Presario R3000 Laptop. I hope you can advise me of the proper additional hardware I will need, and the steps I must take to make this connection possible.

I've used a free program called Audacity with all my cassettes. It takes just a while to learn how to use it - and you can't beat the price. Do an Internet search for it and you're on your way. There's a ton of info about this program available, so you can decide if it's what you need. I'm sure you'll get other replies here as well.

You can get a 2 way cord, one that goes into the headphone jack of the cassette, the other end goes into the mic. Jack in your computer, then you can use something like sound recorder (comes with pc's) to record.

Your laptop should have a "Line IN" port, it is called a 1/8" mini jack. Connect the "Line OUT" from the cassette player to the Line IN port using an appropriate cable.

On your laptop mixer controls, make sure Line IN is enabled. Now run a sound capturing program such as Audacity or any of the freeware programs available.

Now the sound editing programs will most likely capture in WAV format, so 1 minute of music is about 10 Mb in disk space.

If your looking to make MP3's, you will probably need to purchase a retail product, since the MP3 format is licensed technology.
