The answer(s) provided ignored the fact that the dryer works fine in timed mode.

The dryer does not work well ( slow to dry clothes ) in auto dry mode.

This is a maytag gas dryer LDG482. Have tested both thermostats, replaced igniter, cleaned lint from all ducts.

It sounds like you did not clean it well enough. Did you totally disassemble it and take out the ducts and wash them out? The auto mode works by comparing the temperature between two sensors and if one is dirty it will not work. Either your sensors are bad or it's still dirty. Just cleaning it a little by vacuuming it out does not work and never has worked because the deposits are like concrete on the inside of all air ducts. They may even look clean until you take them out of the dryer, but they are lined with lint deposits. You also have a moisture sensor that gets blocked with deposits and will not work dirty.

Drtom. Thanks for your reply. It's possible I didn't clean well enough. Particularly the moisture sensor as I don't know where to find it.

I did not clean the duct from the gas flame to the entry point of the drum. I did not clean the duct between the blower and the back of the dryer ( other than verifying that there is nothing loose which can be reached by a small hand via the duct opening at the back )

I did wash thoroughly the duct work between the filter and the blower. I did wash ( scrubbed with a brush ) the cycling thermostat located on the duct between the blower and the duct opening at the back.

I did verify working functionality ( including temp testing ) of both the high limit and cycling thermostats.

I'd like to understand the way the auto-dry works. I do not see any sensors other than the cycling thermostat, high limit thermostat and flame sensor. Since these are all clean, I would guess that my problem doesn't have to do with lint build up on those components.

Do you have any further suggestions based on this additional information?

Where is the moisture sensor on the Maytag LDG482? I can't tell from any of the schematics provided by parts web sites.

The only way to clean a dryer is to strip it down to the shell and clean each part individually with water and soap. There are no shortcuts. From what you said I bet you have a 5-gallon bucket of dirt to remove still. Anything you miss will cause a problem. Get in there and remove the pieces and clean each part and you will cure the problems and make it run like new again. Make sure to mark each part as you unplug the wires and it will be easy.
