    OPT - H1 taxes
    Hi,

My status changed from f1 to H1 in the Dec '06. I was on OPT up until that point. What forms would I have to file (? 1040-NR /1040- NR-EZ) and what additional documents would I need to send. Here is a brief summary :
I came to US on an H1 in Aug 2003 and graduated in Dec 2005. I was on OPT since January 2006 and my H1 started on the 1st of Dec '06. I had student loans from an Indian Bank that I paid off in full in 2006.

    I would appreciate any help!

    Thanks in advance
    Shree

    Shree:

File Form 1040NR-EZ as a non-resident alien. Be sure to file Form 8843 one last time with the Form 1040NR-EZ.

You should be able to claim the loan interest as student loan interest, but you MUST be able to show that you used the money to pay for your tuition and other applicable fees.

For tax year 2007, you will file as a resident alien.
