Old American Standard shower diverter problem
I rebuilt my 50 year old Am. Standard tub faucets (3 knob system), including repacking the diverter stem. Everything came out fine except for the (existing) diverter stem, which now won't fully shut off the shower flow. Instead of just turning 1/2 turn and stopping, the handle keeps turning (counterclockwise) and the shower head never fully shuts off (although the water comes out of the tub spout OK). When I take the stem out of the wall it seems just fine (stopping at 1/2 turn). But when in the faucet body, it just keeps on turning. Any ideas in what I should look for? Is the barrell possibly turning inside the faucet body?

Just to be sure you are installing it correctly remove it again, unscrew it 1/2 turn and then reinstall. Now try turning the stem. I have not worked on one of these since I was in my 20s so working from memory here

Non-standard bonnet on shower diverter valve [ 1 Answers ]

I need to remove a faulty diverter valve from my shower. It is an older Sterling model and unfortunately, there is only one hex nut to grab onto (rather than having both a bonnet and packing nut like the H/C stems) and it isn't one of the standard sizes, e.g. 21/32, 27/32, etc. I believe it is...
