    Better muffler?
I was just curious if it would cause any damage to swap out an original equipment muffler on a 16.5 HP Briggs that is on a Craftsman riding mower with a bigger and quieter one from a tractor supply store or an automotive store?

    Hi,
No harm should occur. Mufflers are one of the areas of the machine where the factories "shave" a few pennies off the final cost of the machine by using ones with thinner material and fewer baffles. Most are made by a very few companies.
All you should have to do is match the engine model and then hope it fits the frame.

    Thanks crigby.

    BUT,

What I was thinking was to put one similar to a motorcycle muffler. Not as big of course. I wouldn't be able to match any engine model. I would just be looking for a 1" ID muffler.

    Hi,
Yes I have seen it done. Saw a man have a flexible tailpipe run beneath the deck of his machine and out the rear. Difficult to adjust his carb.
