Respiratery contagious infection - running nose, sneezing, and green gunk
Hi! I seem to have a problem on my respiratory.

I sneeze a lot throughout a day, every day, and have constant running nose. I actually counted how many times I sneezed yesterday. It was 16 and it was not as much as I usually do!! Green sticky stuff often comes out from my nose and lower sinus even though I blow and spit it out constantly. When I blow my nose, I feel remainder on my back of sinus that I can never get rid of.

I have the very problem ever since I was a child but I didn't do anything for it as I thought it is just allergy for something. I took allergy test long time ago and found some allergen such as house dust, pollen, and dogs/cats but the level was not too high. I have tried some over the counter allergy medicines. It helps to stop running nose but I still sneeze and feel something is still there on my lower sinus. I have been dealing with this for many years and it has become part of my life enough even not to realize I am sniffing all the time until my new friend told me so!

I stayed at the friend’s house for 1.5 months since Christmas. After a while, he started sneezing and having the green stuff as well. He never had sinus problem in his 43 years life. He says whenever I start breathing with my mouth, his nose react to it, even from 10 feet away. I asked my campus doctor what it could be. The doctor said it can’t be me causing it. His opinion is that my friend might be allergic to my shampoo, cosmetics, laundry detergent or something. We tried using different shampoo, cosmetic, mouthwash, laundry detergent etc . But any of them didn't work. An over the counter nasal wash kit didn’t work for us, either. Only thing helped a little bit was gargling with Listerine. We tried to stay in my place and it got worse since my room is really small garage apartment and the room is filled with my breath. We have been trying not to see each other for a while and his sinus has been getting much better though it hasn’t cleared up completely yet. I don’t have chronic bad breath but we are now trying the Dr. Kat’z products thinking it may help to kill some bacteria.

He strongly believes I have infection on my respiratory that is contagious. As I pay attention to this problem, I noticed that it may interfere in my career. I am a professional clarinetist and I sneeze during rehearsals and even performances. I could hold the sneeze during a performance before but I can’t recently. Does it mean I am getting worse? As my campus doctor doesn’t believe it is infection, I don’t know what to do or whom I should talk to. Do you have any idea what it is and what I can do?

Go to another doctor and get started on a course of antibiotics. You DO seem to have an infection and that will not go away on its own.
