    Wrong W-2 Box 16 and 18
    Hi,

I would appreciate it if anyone can help me with this.

I am a student with F1 visa living in Pittsburgh, PA. I got two W2 from last year:

    1. W2 from my school in Pittsburgh. This one is only taxable by federal.
    2. W2 from a company in Michigan. I worked there last summer.

My problem is with the 2nd W2.
They gave me two copies, one showing state wages (box 16) for Michigan and one showing state wages for Pennsylvania. The amount in both box 16s are the same as the one for federal wages (box 1). The one with Pennsylvania is also showing local wages, but it's only showing part of box 1 (which is very strange... maybe it's a mistake). And they did deduct the taxes for MI, PA state tax, and Pittsburgh local tax from my paycheck.

I understand that I have to pay MI state tax since I worked there. For state of PA, (I read about Pennsylvania's Personal Income Tax guide) I should be considered as a nonresident. Since I don't live or work in PA, I shouldn't have to pay for PA state tax. I want to file a return to get PA state tax withheld back. My problem is that, the W2 I got shows all of my income is PA-taxable (W2 box 16).

My question is: **Do I need contact my employer to get a corrected copy of W2 with box 16 (state taxable wages)=0 in order to get refund for the tax withheld by PA? Or can I just file the PA state tax return with my current W2?**

The same situation applies to Pittsburgh local tax too. I want to file a return to get my tax withheld back.

I have been searching for information online for a couple of days now. If someone here could help and tell me what I can do now, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    -Mike

You will file Pennsylvania return. If you were never present in Pennsylvania, then you will show Pennsylvania state income as 0 and will get full refund. Attack tax return of MI. You may even attach a statement from employer that you were never in Pennsylvania.

In MI return you will show total income earned while in MI.

So I don't have to ask my employer to send me a corrected W2 in order to get full refund from Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh?
