Fan blades outside only turn when sun comes out, does not work at night when colder
Up until a few days ago I was using the AC to cool down. It started getting cold outside so I switched it to heating. The fan blows cold air out of the vents all night but the blade outside does not spin. The blades only spin outside when the sun seems to come up and shine on the outside unit. By then it is like 10 AM and a lot warmer outside. Could it have to do with the inside switch or is it something outside, maybe a fuse somewhere I have not seen. None of the lights turn on inside as well like they used to before when I turn the temperature to its highest or put it on EMHeat. I hope it is something small but do not know what to look for.
    Thanks

This is a heat pump? The outside unit should have a compressor as well as a fan. The outside fan only blows air through a coil. The Freon must be compressed before being directed to one coil or another to be cooled. The compressor is not working either when the outside fan doesn't?

Could the outside unit have a thermostat that shuts it off in the cooling mode when it gets too cold? Perhaps the mode switch isn't working completely. There could be a relay or solenoid stuck on the outside unit.

I do not know what all these pieces of the AC unit are called but I will do my best to explain what they look like. The outside AC Unit only makes a clicking sound like it is trying to turn the blades so I took the cover off the outside AC Floor Unit (the cover where the electric wires are kept from getting wet, shocking, etc.) I put a blowdryer with heat to the computer like components,( looks Like a circuit board connected to wires that go into the part where the blades are.) I only put it about 30 to 60 seconds and the fans started turning and finally warmed up my house. It seems like it is backwards, the blades only spin to heat the house when it is hot outside or the sun hits the AC Unit and warms it enough to kick in, when it is cold outside like at night it does nothing but blow out cold air with the fan.
These components, are they sensors of some kind and can they be replaced individually and where can they be bought? I hope someone can understand more or less what is happening to my Unit.
    Thanks

We don't seem to be making much progress. Maybe it is time to give up and call a service man.

I have found out that it is the part that looks like a circuit board on the outside unit. I have to have that replaced as one whole piece.
    Thanks

The fan control board needs to be replaced. Now I need to see where I can find one and how much they will cost.
