Object movement when water is added
Two boats are tied alongside two parallel docks If a stom adds water to the lake, will the boats move closer together or farther apart?

This sounds like a trick question, as it depends on the geometry of the boat hull, dock, and rope tie points. As the boats rise do the ropes force them closer to the dock? Does the shape of the hull allow the boats to move closer to the dock as the boat rises relative to the dock? Or are the ropes tied in such a way that there is more slack as the boats rise, allowing them to drift away from the dock? You also haven't indicated whether the boats are tied up on opposite sides of the docks or on the same side, so regardless of whether they move closer to their respective docks or further away it's impossible to say wheher the boats get closer to each other. Bottom line is: there's not enough information to answer the question as stated. However - if you want to totally ignore any effects of geometry regarding how the boats are tied to the dock, one microscopice effect of rising water level is that due to the curvature of the earth as the boats rise they move apart by a very small amount - depending on how far apart the docks are.

Thank-you. You are correct, I was not clear. I was trying to be very
brief. Our situation is... we are attempting to get permission to
attach a finger dock on to an existing marina (moveable with water
level). We must move the marina down 5ft which comes within 2 ft of a
fixed dock. The fixed dock and end of marina are parallel. The
owners of marina and fixed dock are saying that when wter rises in
lake the marina and fixed dock will collide. Before last rain we
measured 9ft between the two... after heavy rain (2ft added to lake)
we measured 12.5ft between. None of the dock owners believe this.
    Appreciate your help.
