Hi Everyone,

I am trying to replace the ICM but I'm stuck. Cap's off, shield's off, rotor's off tried to remove screws holding plate which is blocking the screws holding the ICM. Is it better for me to just remove the whole distributor? Afraid of destroying the screw heads. Also there is also something (not sure what it's called) on the shaft that would prevent me from removing the plate that's blocking the screws holding the ICM. It looks like it has a little "pin" holding it in place. Do I need a center pull device to get this off?

The first thing you want to do, Gablehouse, is remove the coil for greater access. If you haven't read this, it should help:

I'd strongly recommend replacing the coil at the same time.

It's easy enough, if you're having trouble, to remove the whole distributor and place it on your workbench for servicing.

My dad says that his mechanic replaced the coil because car wouldn't start one day, just would turn over. On my car it looks like the coil it located behind the valve cover and to the left of the distributor when facing the distributor.

I will remove the distributor to work on it. How you remove the "thing" (not sure what it is called, looks like a metal cylindrical donut with some kind of pointer) from the shaft. This "thing" looks like it will prevent me from removing a plate with a black "box" that is preventing me from getting to the ICM. This "thing" looks like it has some sort of pin device squeezed between shaft and itself. Should I mark the exact position of this "thing" before I pull it off? How does one pull it off?

I called an discount auto part store. They said they have a cheap ICM for 49 and upgraded for 79. What do you recommend?

Yes, I would remove the distributor and work on it at a work bench. Just be sure to mark the distributor's mounting bracket, in order to have the timing fairly close later.

I'm not sure what the "thing" you are referring to. The ICM is mounted on a heat sink, which is usually secured by two machine screws. Sorry I can't be of more help. I would go with a name brand ICM--I installed a BWD, with a lifetime warranty, in my Civic three years ago.

If necessary, consider replacing the whole distributor proactively--bearings tend to only last around 90,000 miles.
