    Fireplace leak
When it rains hard for a long period, our carpet gets wet around our fireplace. (just on the right side) Our roof is only 4 yrs old, and we have had our roofer come out to see if it was the flashing. He says it's not, but thinks it is just coming straight in through the chimney. We do not have a chimney cap. So we put a tarp over it and for over a year thought that was the problem, until after this last hurricane. We came home after evacuating and the carpet was wet. My husband thinks that because one of the bands that was holding the tarp down broke that, that is why water came in. He thinks that the water blew in under the tarp. I am confused and do not know what to do. We used to think that maybe it was coming under the slab, but we have had people come out to do water tests, and they said no. Now, we wonder again?? I am going to have my husband run the hose down the chimney again to see if that is where it is coming in from. Do you think we just need a chimney cap? Who do we call to come and check on this problem? Roofer, contractor??

A competent roofer will be able to deduce this problem.

A chimney cap is no more than a mortar covering for the brick,it sheds water from the edge of the chimney only.

A chimney hood (something that covers the flu) is more in line with what your in need of.(thats how it sounds to me anyway)

A contractor or roofer can take the proper measurements for a hood and give you some piece of mind, much less a dry carpet!

A chimney rain cap which will cover the flu opening is a good idea to keep water and animals out, I'd just put one on and see if the water problems go away. I have to have one or the Racoons move in. A roofer, other than the one who did your roof, is a good person to take a look at this.

I agree, a closeable chimney damper would do the best fix. Top Sealing Chimney Cap Dampers | Energy Saving Damper | Chimney Cap Damper
