    Murray 14hp, 42 " cut, model # ? Transmission shot
I just found out that my riding mower transmission is shot. I've been told that it is a sealed unit and can't be repaired. Murray is no longer in business. Is there a way I can still get a transmission for it?

MTD did buy Murray and they make a few others, White, Yardman, Bolens, Cub. Never have seen a sealed transmission on any lawn tractor. Look under your mower from the back, the trans is right between your tires, aluminium and bolts all over. I still would not tackle fixing one myself unless I knew for sure it was ca simple part. I had the same problem. The transmission is made by Tecumseh and you can go on their website or call to see if they can get you one. It will be expensive. Get the model number from the transmission and search eBay. That's where I got mine and put it in myself.

Last I heard, Murry was purchased by Briggs & Stratton. I don't believe they sold it. Briggs also purchased Simplicity L/G equipment last year; so get ready for their quality to drop in the near future.

According to our briggs rep, they, not mtd owns murray. And we order our murray parts from briggs and stratton!

Think about this, if your engine is still good, and the frame, body and deck is still in good condition, you may try to find a shop that deals with used equipment or parts. You should be able to get at least $100. Up to about $250. For a used murray with a transmission out. Then take whatever you can get for the unit and apply it to another new unit with a warranty. Even though I do not particularly care for mtd products, even though they make most of my money for me, you can get one at wal-mart for about $800. Or less. And this time of year maybe a lot cheaper. You have to consider that the new transmission could be anywhere from $150. To $650. And that is if you do the work, that is just for the transaxle. So look into all your options before you invest in a new transaxle.

    p.s.
I am not in anyway judging your equipment
for I have not seen it. I just know what you
can expect for someone buying it for used
parts or fixing the transaxle problem will probably
want to pay. And don't forget that murray is no
longer being manufactured like it once was, so that
    will decrease its value also.

I do stand corrected re: Murray being bought by MTD. They bought so many others, MTD and Briggs both, they should buy each other so we'd have mowers that don't run or cut well.
