    B&S 14HP Model 287707 slow crank starting
I have a 1992 MTD 1442 riding mower with a B&S 14HP OHV engine MOdel 287707 Type 0153 01 Code 9210214A. It hasn't been starting except with the use of a charger/starter. Engine wouldn't crank but when charger/starter put on it, could get engine started. Now even the charger/starter won't start the engine. When the key is turned with the charger/starter on the battery, the engine will crank slowly then spin for a second or two then stop cranking. I thought the battery was the problem but took the battery out and connected the charger/starter directly to the battery cables and had the same result. Have removed the battery and checked it with a voltmeter and it reads 12 volts when not in the mower. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How many max amps (when switched to starting) does the charger/starter put out... 50 amps won't do, 200 is a must...

    How old is the battery?

Charger/starter only put out 50 amps. Don't know age of battery but it is at least 3-5 years old. Thanks.

    50 amps won't do it...
I'd recommend replacing the battery, 2 years is about the life of them...

If the valves are out of adjustment, this can cause the engine to spin, then stop. Have the valves adjusted.
