Thanks for taking the time in reading my post - this site is SO helpful! :-)

Back in March 2006, my credit card company in the UK, Egg Plc, decided to put a nice default against me :-(

The story goes a little something like this...

I had 2k on the card and made regular monthly payments. The card was registered against an address which I moved out of and on my next monthly payment after I had left it, I sent them a cheque as I normally did and a letter accompanying it informing them of my new details.

About 6 (ish) weeks later my bank had sent me the cheque back with no explanation. I called the bank and they didn't know why I had it back and confirmed that my accoutn was still live and active, the cheque hadn't been stopped and my bank was in credit to cover the cheque amount.

The cheque was for £40 and at that time, I had a balance of £8,000!!

Anyway, I sent off another cheque to Egg for for £40 and another one in the same envelope for the same amoutn to cover the next period.

Another 6 (ish) weeks later, my bank had returned this to me again with a compliment slip from the bank saying "no account, regards" I called my bank and they said that's all the info the could give me and again confirmed that my accoutn was in order.

By this time, when I contacted Egg, they had referred it to a debt management company and had nicely issued me with a default for 2k!! Grrrrrrr.

They sent the default notice to my old address too so I had NO idea I had it until I called!

I have contacted Egg and have told them all I have said on here and what happened was, they had never received the letter from me stating my new address so obviously when I sent cheques off to them, thy couldn';t find me on their system under my new address and sent it back to my bank to forward back onto me.

They have said they won't take the default off as I suppose I have no actual proof of sending this letter with my new address on despite me sending them a copy (I keep copies of ALL correspoandance I send anywhere! ) but suppose anyone could create a "real" letter in their eyes.

My bank has sent me a letter confirming that my accoutn was in order at that time etc etc but I REALLY need this lifting as it is unfair I will struggle to get mortgages etc with a default hanging over my head!!

It's been two years and to be honest, haven't done anything else about it as didn't think I had a chance... or do I?

If you have the info from your bank, it is very possible that if they did not honor a check that was good ( but why were your checks not being honored) you may be able to hold them liable for this

This wasn't the bank's fault. Egg couldnt' find an account for me (I write my address details on the back of all cheques in case they get separated from any letters I send in) and as they hadn't changed my address details to me new one, they couldn't find an account for this new address so sent it back to my bank so they could forward it back to their customer, me. :(
