    Tub spout leak
    Hello,
I just installed a new tub spout with diverter. When I run the water just from the tub spout there is no leaking, but when I lift the diverter to run the water from the shower head, there is a leak from what may be coming from the caulk where the tub meets the tile shower wall just underneath the tub spout. Any ideas why and/or how to fix? When I was assembling the tub spout the directions say something like that the stub out nipple needs to be 1/2" to 3/4" coming out from the wall and mine is maybe less than a 1/2". Also, I used the reducer adapter that came in the package and one or more of the prongs on that may have broke off. And then when I was turning the tub spout on to the extension nipple, I tightened too hard maybe and there was maybe a snap and the reducer adapter came off the stub out nipple and was screwed up deep into the extension nipple. I took the reducer adapter back out and redid everything and now I have the leak where I said previously. Any ideas? Thanks

"mine is maybe less than a 1/2". That is probably the issue as these spouts are depth specific with their O-RINGS!

Here, the pipe should have the end so the end is deburred and has no sharp edges. It may also help to use some silicone grease on the pipe end so the O-RING doesn't get caught up on the end of the pipe.

Try these things.. if they don't work then most likely the pipe is too short and needs to be extended.

Back to you for your thoughts on this...

    Thanks Mark,
Actually I just checked for the leak again and it is actually coming out the back of the spout where the hole is underneath the back of the spout where it meets the shower wall. How do I debur the pipe? Just use a file? Thanks

Spout seems too short to me... a picture would help here!'

I don't think deburring will help, but to debur a pipe you take some sandcloth and rub the end of the pipe smooth. Then, you grease the end of the pipe and the O-RING and reinstall the tub spout. If that doesn't work, the pipe is too short and needs to be extended!

So if I were to get an extension (pardon my ignorance), what would I ask for (1/2" pipe extension-how long? 1/2"?) Thanks

Sorry, I see you went to a lot of trouble but for some reason the links don't show up as anything. If you paste them into your address box do pictures show up for you?

You can post pictures directly to this site if you want... just click on "go advanced" button at the posting box (just below it) and then on the new page that pops up click on "manage attachments" and then follow the pop-ups and see if you can figure it out. More info. Is available in the "forum community" link (under forum help) on the home page.

    Back to you...
