    Worm in dog poop?
Our dog pooped this morning and we saw what we think is a worm. Does anyone know what this is and what Otc we could use to treat it? Our vet is closed until next week. Thanks for your help. We have been giving him pumpkin seeds for a couple weeks and hartz wormer from walmart.

    Thank you!

Looks like a tape worm... Unfortunately you need wormer from the vet. The type of wormer used is pretty potent and I don't think you can get it over the counter... Or at least the stuff that works..

You're dogs life is not in danger, either wait for your vet or go somewhere else. If they are closed for the week, I'm sure another vet is available to care for all their patients who need it.

Throw away the harts... It's poison... This brand has been hurting a lot of pets with their different products.

So you have been treating him for worms for several weeks already? Who/how was the presence of worms diagnosed in the first place? If your dog does have worms the pumpkin seeds will kill the worms and they then pass out the dog with each defecation. Did this "worm" move at all?

Yes it did move... we gave him 1 pill for the past 2 months(harts). Anything over the counter we could give him with the pumpkin seeds?

It is foolish and dangerous to attempt to diagnose and treat your dog - I have read so many tragic stories about over-the-counter wormers and flea "remedies." Dogs die of poisoning every day.

And, yes, if it moved it's probably a worm as opposed to something else.

You're grinding up the pumpkins seeds or buying ground up pumpkin seeds, right?

The picture that you posted appears to be a tape worm. Stick to the dewormers that you get from your vet, a lot of the otc the stuff just doesn't work that well. And as Lucky said, Hartz has harmed many animals, so stay away from it in all forms especially flea prevention products.
A huge factor in dealing with tapeworms is flea control.
A tape worm is the result of an ingested flea (they swallow them when grooming)
In short I would take the dog and a stool sample to the vet, have the sample checked for intestinal parasites, pick up some flea prevention, and get a dewormer that kills the tapeworms also.
Note that the cheaper ovc flea products do not work as well and can be dangerous to your pet. Have your vet recommend a product that he trusts.

Most dewormers that you can get at department stores are usually not effective for tapeworm, which is what your dog has. They also can be dangerous (and usually don't work for the worms they are supposed to kill, anyways).

Dewormer at the vet shouldn't cost you more than $20. Your dog will be fine until they open. I'd suggest bringing your pup in to check for fleas - it's one of the main reasons dogs get tapeworms. The other way they can get them is if they eat dead animals. If he is one that gets into carcasses, I would look into regular deworming.
