How many layers of regular shingles is it OK to put a metal roof on top of?
We are planning on putting a metal roof over shingles. But there are 3 layers of regular asphalt shingles and one of the old shake shingles. Should we tear off some or all of these old shingles before applying the metal?

You have to tear off all of them, according to code anywhere. You already have too many.
