How to I get to the coil to see if there is any ice on it?
Our condensate line was clogged with a very large bug. We cleared the line and reconnected. How do I get to the coil to see if there is ice on it.

    HI chair,

A plugged drain line won't cause the coil to freeze. It will only cause the drain pan to overflow, which Im sure is what you experienced. If the coil is freezing up, you will see frost or ice on the large refrigerant line entering the coil,(just pull back the black insulation). Now if you want to visually inspect the coil, you will have to either take apart the plenum, or cut a hole in it. Most coils sit directly on top of the furnace, so you would actually have to remove the coil to see the bottom side to see if it is plugged up or not, usually not a do it yourself job, as it may require reclaiming refrigerant etc.

Why do you think there is ice on the coil? Do you have poor airflow? If you are seeing ice, or lack of airflow, change filters, shut unit off for a few hours, then restart unit and see how it works. Shutting unit off for a few hours will allow for any ice buildup to melt. If it freezes up again, it may be time to call in a heating and airconditioning pro. Good luck an please let me know how things work out.
