Hi All,

Here is my issue.

Recently, our home warranty company paid to replace a 25 year old 7 SEER Borg Warner outside unit, but swore up and down that the indoor Borg Warner Coil would be OK with the new 10 SEER Carrier. We no longer have this home warranty company and they are not standing behind anything that has happened.

We have had all kinds of issues with water leaking from the coil through the furnace since the installation. After having someone look at it, he has suggested that we get a new 10 SEER rated coil to match up with the 10 SEER rated outside unit.

We live in Missouri - where all four seasons exist.

My question is this. Our gas furnace is 25 years old and could die any year now. Should we go with an air to air heat pump now, or just pay to have the coil replaced?

Installing 10 SEER air conditioning equipment ? The minimum SEER has been 13 since Jan. of 2006, you may need a new coil due to rusted out condensate pan but if you have a 10 SEER unit then it will match the old coil (the difference might be if the old coil does not have a TXV and if the new one does) The 10 SEER will match with all the metering devices.
You did not say what type gas you have available , if it is natural gas then stay with this if replacing the furnace , if it is propane then you might think about replacing if with a heat pump (more efficient)
If replacing the coil then it would be wise to do the furnace as well due to the age . Good luck. Mike

Our home warranty provided for a 13 SEER only if a 10 wasn't available - which unfortunately in our case, it was still available. I'm told that the evap coil is an 8 SEER and that our Carrier condenser unit is a 10 SEER. Someone told me that it matches up, but because of this, we really have a 2.5 ton unit, not a 3 ton unit. Is that accurate?

The person who looked at our coil said that the pan was dirty and cleaned it out, but never mentioned anything about it being rusted out. They are coming again today, so I'll ask about this possibility. What is a TXV?

We have natural gas. What should I look for in a natural gas replacement furnace?

Stay with natural gas, it is the most efficient, What is the mod. Number of your Carrier? The tonnage will not change due to a different efficiency (feeding you a baloney sandwich)
If you have water coming from the evaporator coil if needs to be looked at to find out why.
A TXV is short for thermostatic expansion valve , if you buy a new coil ask for a coil with a TXV, it is more efficient.

Hello All,

I think we're going to go with a heat pump system. Our electric utility has a reduced rate program from October to May and has attractive financing options that I think we'll take advantage of.

What should I look for in an air to air heat pump system with natural gas backup?

Check out the factory warranty when purchasing the higher SEER rated equipment or higher COP rating that heat pumps are rated at (the higher the number, the more efficient)
You will pay a little more but the increased warranty and higher efficiency is well worth it and they are quieter.
There are control packages to sequence the furnace to the heat pump, this type system(duel fuel) is a good way to go but more costly to in stall.

Does anyone have experience with the Airease brand of equipment, made by Lennox? I can get a 16SEER Heat Pump system in the Airease, coupled with an Airease 80,000 80% for a decent price.

I have seen many Airease in my area and they seem to be good units. Folks who have them seem to like them
