    solve by elimination: I need to elimiate x and then y and then substitute x and y
    (fraction) 2/3x - y = 2
    x + (fraction) 1/2y = 7

    or

    2/3x - y = 2
    x + 1/2y = 7

    To solve by elimination, you need to line up the x's and y's so that you can subtract (or add) one equation to the other and eliminate one of the variables.
    By multiplying the second equation by 2, you get:

    2x + y = 14

    Now add the two equations together to get

    2/3x - y = 2
    2x + y = 14

    8/3 x = 16

    Then just solve for x and use that to solve for y.
