To solve by elimination, you need to line up the x's and y's so that you can subtract (or add) one equation to the other and eliminate one of the variables.
By multiplying the second equation by 2, you get:
2x + y = 14
Now add the two equations together to get

2x + y = 14
8/3 x = 16
Then just solve for x and use that to solve for y.
