We recently upgraded our thermostat and have found that the instructions lack the information we need. We have both a heat pump and an ancillary furnace for our home and when installing our thermostat we found that we have both a "W" wire and an "O" wire and the contact spot requires that only either the W or the O touch the contact. We elected to connect just the O as we know that it is linked to the heat pump itself but now after our first freeze overnight we've found our heat pump has frozen partly and our heat is not reaching our designated number. We were just wondering if we could connect the two into the same contact point or if there is anything else we must do to get both wires connected and in working order. Completely new to this whole thing... ANY help is completely appreciated.

The new thermostat is a Honeywell model RTH6300B.

The old thermostat was original to the house built in 1981. It's a GE Model 3AAT80B1A1 OR.

Its norm for your heat pump to frost up in cold weather. Your thermostat may not set up for 2 stage heat, if W and O is the same circuit with out a W2 circuit.
