Why Can't Soft Contact Lenses Be Put in Water?
    Hi, All!

The title is the question that I have. I've always been curious about that since using soft lenses from time to time.

    Thanks!

Because it will not rehydrate the lens properly. Saline solution isn't too expensive, and a lot of places just give it to you when you purchase lenses. You can rinse them in water, but they need to be immediately put into saline afterwards.

From wiki answers dot com --

Even purified water still contains contaminants that can be harmful to your eyes so you should never use water to clean, store, or soak your lenses in.

Solutions are designed to thoroughly cleanse, and remove protein build ups and bacteria from the lenses. Always make you check with your optometrist before purchasing solutions as not all types will be suitable for you.

So then, how does the saline solution hydrate them properly as opposed to using water, please?

I've been under the impression that water would somehow cause them to disintegrate.

    Thanks!
