I recently had problem of water leaking from the shower area. The technician who came to check it out says the shower drain strainer need to be replaced. My questions are:
(1) He says in order to replace the drain strainer he has to cut a hole below the floor in order to reach it. Isn't the strainer visible from the above the shower floor?
(2) The price of a drain strainer is about $25-$30 but he gives me a quote for $1250 for the replacement. Is that reasonable?
I am obviously missing something there.

He has described replacing the shower drain, not the screen. A screen has nothing to do with making a water tight seal anyway. His price does seem steep but he is there and we are not. Get 2 more bids and tell us how they come in.

To afaroo (John) and ballengerb1, let me first say how appreciative I am for your taking the time to offer assistance.

(1) I am a very low-tech man. I do not know how to take a picture and post it on internet so I can only describe the strainer for John. It is circular with a 4 1/2 inch diameter. It is made of plastic material and seems almost to be a part of the shower floor -- there is no obvious way it can be removed although it is surrounded with a groove that sets it apart form the rest of the shower floor.

(2) I looked up "shower drain" on the internet. I agree with ballengerb1 that that must be the part that the serviceman was talking about replacing. It is below the shower floor and must be reached from underneath the floor by cutting a hole, which is what he proposed. The internet shows two types of drains costing $58 and $168 respectively but it does not provide information on the typical labor cost for replacement. I will definitely take ballengerb1's advice to get some additional estimates.
