    Theft Under 5000 and Mischief
Okay, So I know I'm not smart, but that's besides the point. Wednesday night I was walking home from a party, completey drunk and decied to break into cars. But they where unlocked, so no damage was done. The cops caught me, arrested me and took me home. This is my first real offence and I have a court date and finger printing next month.

What I would like to know is, what are my chances of going to jail, I am 18 but I turn 19 in August. And should I get a lawyer? All the help is needed, thank-you!

I was a cop and a probation officer in MD and I have never seen anyone go to jail for a first offense of that nature. I would expect some sort of probation or community service, maybe a fine and court costs.

Yes, you should get a lawyer and I suspect that at your age you do not have a massive income and are therefore likely eligible for a public defender.

By the way, in many states they have first offender programs for the minor offenses where you can avoid a conviction by agreeing to do some community service or something similar. In my state its called probation before judgement, in other places its call diversion, etc. Ask about this type of program as you don't want a conviction on your record. Its hard enough to get a job these days even without a criminal record.

In my experience, people who commit crimes while drunk are often sent to alcoholic counseling or evaluation by the judge.

I was a police officer for many years in Georgia and here, each time you illegally entered the car would be a felony for just getting into the car, So how many cars would make a difference,
In GA you could well go to jail for at least a short time for your first offense. Since each offense , each time you broke into a car would be a separate crime.
So if you did 10 cars, that would be 10 separate charges
