    Defective CERTAINTEED roof shingles
Anyone out there living though the nightmare of having to replace roofing shingles that are only 13 years old. Purchased CERTAINTEED shingles in 1996. The granules started to fall off in 2001. Corners are curled up, large cracks, deteriorated to paper thin, very little adhesive remains at overlaps. May question is, Is there any class action law suit to help the lonely consumer?

Before you start thinking of a suit did you check your warranty? CertainTeed Roofing - Warranties I would start by talking to the supplier who sold you the shingles and then also contact Certainteed. I would have made my first call in 2001

Contact the contractor. Know what the guarantee was.

    If that's unsuccessful contact Certainteed.

Shingles just have adhesive about 2 inches up from the top of the granualed part.

The corners concern me a bit if not confined to the first two courses.

Suggest you post a picture using "Go Advanced/Manage Attachements"

If its confined to the first couple of courses it could be improper installation. Some manufacturers require the use of a ice and water shield there or they will not guarantee the shingles.

Constant dripping could cause granuales to deteriorate.

There are about 3 ways to do the first two courses of shingles. Double, cutting and starter strip. The latter two are about the same. The first subjects it to wind damage.

    Was a drip edge used?

I am curious what you did on this - I am about to approach Certainteed about the same issue.

Joined a class action law suit, go to Capretz & Associates - HOME. In the mean time, I could not wait any longer, the roof was replaced last month. 19 squares for $3,200. Do not approach Certainteed.

We purchased our home 2 years after the original owner put the roof on using CertainTeed Shingles. Now it is 12-13 years later and we have to replace our roof as well. I have no proof of what was originally paid for the new roof, but in good faith we thought we were purchasing a home with a solid new roof to last 25 - 30 years we were told. OUr estimate to replace the roof just came in at $11,000. Not happy. I don't know how we can reclaim anything when we don't have the original papers for roof. Any ideas out there?

Long shot but call your building department to see if a permit was pulled when the new roof was put in. You would be able to see who the contractors was and start by calling them. He would likely be very cooperative since he doesn't have any exposure and may think you would have him dothe new roof. Again a long shot but definitely where I would start.
