Issues with my 88 honda civic; need answer.
Long story short, I don't have a lot of money my mom died when I was 17 and I have been on my own, and had to work instead of finishing school. I haven't had a car for a year, and I bought a honda civic DX hatchback from a guy that lived near me. It ran fine when I tested it, and ran fine for the next few days; suddenly I woke up one morning and it started to idle rough. It got worse; and then it would shut itself off when it was idle; like at a stop light, or waiting to turn. I kept having to turn it back on, and I tried to start it tonight and it would not start. It would turn over, and do nothing 6 out of 7 times. The air intake box is missing. What is wrong with my car? I need it to get to work, please help me. Thanks..

. If the Check Engine Light comes on for two seconds and then goes out, when the ignition switch is turned to ON, replace the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil:

These are the two most problematic components on Hondas. I recommend replacing them every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

Here's what the ICM looks like and costs:

RockAuto.com appears to have an ICM for $47.79. Make sure you know the exact engine you have before ordering.

The most likely culprit is the ICM. In order to save money, replace it first. Be sure to apply silicone heat transfer compound to the back of the new ICM or it won't last long.

. Since there is no air box, it doesn't have an air filter. If this goes on for long, the throttle body, ports, and Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) will become clogged with dirt. Even with an air filter, 80% of the dirt that enters an engine comes through the air intake. Without an air filter, your situation will be much worse. I'd try and get it replaced or rig up a suitable alternative. It's possible cleaning these items now will help a lot:
