I need some help and some opinions. I got in the mail a legal document stating that the father will pay child support. I didn't fill any paper work out to go after him for child support. Should I accept his money?

The other thing is if he was being a abusive and doing drugs and should our child be seeing his father? Would it be important for our child to know his dad. The father is going to counseling and help.

Would It be a good idea for me to get sole custody of our child.

Who/where was the paper from? Lawyer? Gov't agency?

Of course it is important for a child to know their father. Maybe you should try supervised visitation.

First its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.

Did you file for public assistance? They will go after the father for child support on your behalf. But without knowing what that letter says who who its from, its hard to advise.

If you are concerned about your child's safety, then you can request supervised visits. But it will be up to the courts to decide what visitation he will get. It will also be the court's decision on custody. Note there are two types of custody, Legal and physical. Legal custody refers to the parents say in raising the child. Its hard to get sole legal custdy if the other parent wants to be involved. Physical custody refers to who the child lives with. You can get primary physical custody, but he will likely get visitation if he not proven to be a danger.
