    Chirping Water Pipes
Within the last month I have occasionally experienced chirping in my water pipes. I was finally able to track down the source of the chirping to what I believe is the water pressure regulator just above the main water cutoff valve. The device has a cone shape with a nut/bolt coming out of the end of the cone. Does anyone know what is causing the cirping noise and what can I do to repair it?

I could be a wise a$$ and advice you to feed those "chirping pipes" some birdseed and keep them happy but there are a few things you could try first.
The very first thing you must do is purchase a hose bib pressure gage and check the house PSI. (see image) They connect to a outside hose bib nearest to the water service and let you know what the house pressure is,(it should be around 45 PSI). If you're higher then 50 PSI adjust the PRV valve, (see image) to the desired pressure. Loosen the lock nut. For more pressure, turn the adjusting screw down ( clockwise ); orFor less pressure, turn the adjusting screw up ( counter clockwise ). Retighten the Lock Nut so the adjusting screen cannot turn on its own. Noise all gone now? Regards. Tom

Constant running water noise, old water softener pipes? [ 3 Answers ]

When we bought our house, it came with a decommissioned water softener in the laundry room. The pipes behind it (I'm assuming in and out) were capped off with plastic plugs that toggle back and forth. If you're familiar with Dr. Dolittle, I'd call it a pushmi-pullyu setup. (sorry, I'm an admin, not...
