Myth
Jul 10, 2007, 10:28 AM
Lol... I'm sure millie can whip up a wonderful pie for you... lol.
I'm thinking about putting butcher block counter tops in. Or at least something that I don't have to grab a cutting board every time I go to cook... lol. The only problem is budget...
curlybenswife

Butchers blocks the real ones need a hell of a lot of work it's the only think I hated cleaning when I was chef there s to scrub you have to do it with salt and a wire brush.
The only advice I can really give you is stay away from granite its a lot of work and needs treating and polishing and cleaning with special cleaners.

Amen to that!! I have granite and it looks and sounds so nice until you get it... you can't use anything on it. I can hardly disinfect it. You can use it without a cutting board, but I'd rather just have the board... I feel like it is never clean..

I would love to have butcher block counters. Sometimes we can find the old restaurant kind... If I can get some for cheap I will be adding them to my kitchen when we move. The kitchen we will have is absolutely wonderful and big, I can't wait to get there. I need to be more open minded about the new neighbors though! (mother and father in laws)

Jul 10, 2007, 10:40 AM
You got to know proper aseptic technique. Giggle
curlybenswife
Jul 10, 2007, 10:41 AM
Yes Start you have to remember a real block is used to cut raw meat hense why they are scrubbed down with salt and a wire brush to get into all the scratches to bring out rotton stuff they really aren't that hygienic
J_9
Jul 10, 2007, 10:44 AM
You see, in addition to what CBW just said, it is wood and bacteria tends to get into the cracks and crevices and multiplies, so they are pretty, but not practical.

Jul 10, 2007, 10:45 AM
I just want a real kitchen, you.
I won't even be picky about the countertops.
alkalineangel
Jul 10, 2007, 10:46 AM

Jul 10, 2007, 10:47 AM
Mine is too big!! Way too much to clean, and I hate the floors.

OOOOOOo I'm so looking forward to having slate flooring its going to look sooooo cool
startover22
Jul 10, 2007, 10:50 AM
I am done with wanting a butcher block. They sure are cool though. I am a little depressed now! That is OK, I will have acres of fun waiting for me to take care of and needy inlaws. Hmmmph, I will be just fine
Myth
Jul 10, 2007, 10:50 AM
The floors in the new kitchen will be hardwood... The whole house has hardwood already... I really like that... What kind of counter tops do you all recommend then? Can't have those type of germs with the little ones.
alkalineangel
Jul 10, 2007, 10:50 AM
I think mine is pretty... but I have learned to hate the counters...

Jul 10, 2007, 10:52 AM
I do like it! I love it Al what color is it now?
alkalineangel
Jul 10, 2007, 10:54 AM
Its an earthtone from the counter top... its called sandstone I think... but it si just a dark tan. I really want slate or ceramic tile in my kitchen floor... I have nasty linoleum right now... The kitchen was the only thing the previous oners redid but they were horrible at picking out color schemes... im an artist, and I nearly fell over when I wlaked in to light pink, light blue, light yellow, and mint green walls.. loll
Myth I suggest Corian countertops... they make some that look like granite now, but are easier to clean.
Myth
Jul 10, 2007, 10:56 AM
I'll look it up and see what kind of prices I can find... is that the same as those dishes?? I know I probably sound stupid asking that question but hey a closed mouth don't get fed... lol
startover22
Jul 10, 2007, 10:57 AM
Corian is what we have at the new house. I love them...
alkalineangel
Jul 10, 2007, 11:03 AM
I believe it is different from the dishes... I have never personally had the corian, but my sister has and swears by it... of course polished concrete is really poular too. It looks awesome and its really inexpensive
J_9
Jul 10, 2007, 11:03 AM
Myth, I think you mean corell dishes
startover22
Jul 10, 2007, 11:05 AM
Corian is much less money and looks like granite. I thought it was granite when I walked in. You can clean it easy and it is a smooth surface. Look shiny and clean all the time.

Just a note for those of you who want slate or stone floors: be VERY careful what kind of finish is put on them. Some companies will put a horrible finish on the floor that looks GREAT... but is 5x as expensive to keep up. Check with someone on the cost of stripping and refinishing before you choose your finish.
(yes, I work for that kind of company)

Lysol Antibacterial is the best. Spray it on, spread it around with a paper towel and let it air dry.
The air dry is the important part.

I don't get anitbacterial soaps or anything, but with the amount of raw meat and chicken and fish that is made in our home, I have to use clorox antibacterial to clean...
J_9 - I use the lysol stuff in the bathrooms...
CBW.. I get the citrus kind too... I hate the smell of the vinegar stuff..

Ok... Had a long night so I'm going to go lay down while the kids are napping... I'll check back in in a few... I think I figured out my kitchen... lol... black counters tops, white cupboards, hard wood floors and a light purple paint... I think you would have to see it put together though with the purple paint anyway... Then if I decided to change paint it would always match the rest of the kitchen... lol... see you all again soon.

Clean floors, now to finish laundry. I love the sound of your kitchen myth. It sure will be a bright one. With the white cupboards. The house I live in now has white ones and I really like it. Makes me clean them more too so no around the knob build up! I can't wait to get to the new house with the pine cupboars, some with windows some without. Double ovens and two separate sinks. One regular and the other one is in the island. My mother in law did a great job with the cool wooden ceilings and tile floors. I love the house, just weary about going. Anyhow, the rest of the house is mine to get done and I can't wait to get started. I have to pack first cause it is coming up in August or beginning of September. Wow, I can really go on and on. I am done now, you can kick me! Hugs to you...

You have to read one of the posters posts, I don't even remember the name, baby daniel or whatever. I am (was) so pissed, I can't believe my eyes J, I really can't. Maybe I am just to simple. Not in a stupid way but just simple as in no drama, never had it, wanted it, or needed it like some people... I like to read it though, that's for sure. You made me feel better, I really was sick to my stomach, and it wasn't all from the french onion dip!

You are the expert. So tell me why people have to live out their child hood and can't get past it? I lost my mother when I was 5 for goodness sake I don't want to have sex with her though?? She left all four of us, never looked back, no cards, no calls, when I was 31 she shows up in my town and I am just fine. Synnen, more power to you.
Synnen
Jul 10, 2007, 05:30 PM
No... his whole point (I think) is that he doesn't WANT to have sex. Period. He wants a woman to marry him and BE his mother for the rest of his life.
I think MY point is that people are just weird, and the ultimate secret of happiness is finding someone weird in the same ways you are to spend your life with.

Sounds like fun.
Little J's bottom is getting a little better. I had to be a mean mommy last night and squeeze the bum, but he's over it today, and it looks much better. It'll be another week before we know something definite. Thanks for asking.
I can't wit for new kitchen pics!!
A new kitty!! How fun.

Kittens are very cute. But they grow up. Now I exsist for my cat. She follows me from room to room. She acts as if she's my alarm clock! She even plays grab-a$$ with me in the living room! It's great to be so loved! She's my little girl.

Jul 11, 2007, 09:55 AM

Synnen
Jul 11, 2007, 12:13 PM
I'll pack up the house for you, Myth. You can come here and try to do 2 peoples' jobs for me! And I'm GREAT at packing!
Myth
Jul 11, 2007, 12:24 PM
It's not so much the packing just the kids under foot while doing so... and cleaning and prepping the new house after we finally sign for it NEXT WEEK... I will be so happy when I can finally do something in there... lol... I've done two peoples jobs before... and watched five retail stores at the same time... I am fairly good at multitasking... lol... I'm taking a break tonight to see the new harry potter movie with some girl friends of mine... our men have no interest in it so were going to get away from them and the kids for a good while... lol

I'm leaving him home with the kids tonight anyway when we get out to see the movie... I'll see how he does then and if anything actually gets done while I'm gone... Somehow I doubt it... Oh well such is the life of a stay at home mommy. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My favorite song would have to be... wow its so hard... I love music...
Probably a toss up between "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, "Across the Universe" by Rufus Wainwright (orig. Beatles), or "into the mystic" by Van Morrison (my wedding song)... or "moon River" by Sinatra (just because it always makes me smile)

My wedding song is one no one has ever heard of... a song called "Heart of the Home" by Andy Stewart and Manus Lunny. It's the story of a life together, with the chorus going:

And may there be love and laughter

I'm so going to lose my mind today.
I have to leave early, because I have an appointment to get my eyes checked. I need to skip lunch to do so. Steve is still out, and will be the rest of the week. I'm doing my job AND his, and I'm not doing either one very well.
It's not even 9 am and I want to just go back to bed.
alkalineangel
Jul 12, 2007, 07:11 AM
I completely understand hun, I nearly had a meltdown yesterday. I think your workplace must function similar to mine. I hate it when someone is out, and I'm expected to do my average workload on top of theirs in the same amount of time... its very aggravating.
I hope your appointment goes well, and that you get some needed rest soon.
I wake up every morning wishing the day was over, somehow I don't think that is right.
Synnen
Jul 12, 2007, 07:19 AM
My god, we DO work in the same place! I wake up that way too!
I know that's a sign that you should get another job, but honestly... I have no idea how to go about job hunting and arranging interviews while I'm still working at a job. How can you possibly keep that sort of thing secret?
alkalineangel
Jul 12, 2007, 07:32 AM
It's sad isn't it...
It is like a trap... you can't unless you want to use your vacation time to do that and I don't want. I can't find another job even if I wanted to because Im pregnant, and despite what the law says, nobody hires a pregnant lady.
The only good thing about where I work now is that they let me take my classes and make up the time on the weekend. That is the only reason I have been here this long... I have been here for over 6 years now, and I have hated every minute.
I get here and look forward to lunch, and then I get back from lunch and look forward to 5... I hate it. I wish I had the option to just stay home with my kids...

Synnen
Jul 12, 2007, 08:27 AM
Mock interviews? Like you go to a real business to get a feel for what you'll have to do, only there's not really a position?
alkalineangel
Jul 12, 2007, 08:47 AM
Basically.
See I'm in portfolio right now, which is the final class you take in a design degree. You build the portfolio, have it critiqued, and you write resumes etc. Then as a final you get all dolled up like you were going to a real interview, portfolio in hand, and go on mock interviews. These are conducted at local design firms with their creative director. They look at your book and conduct an interview just as if you were coming for a position. Then they submit their thoughts and opinions back to my instructor and she gives me a final grade... sometimes, you get lucky, and the mock interview suddenly becomes a real interview and they hire you, but not typically... it is really stressful.

Lol. Thanks Synn... IM not so sure though, IM much shyer in person, esp if I'm nervous.
Yes I have to have my portfolio completed by next Wednesday, and then I present to my class first, then the interviews are the week after. IM nervous though, and we are required to wear a suit (my office is casual dress) and I really don't want to go buy a maternity suit I will never wear again, and my old one doesn't fit. Im just ready for it all to be over. Its finals time and I'm in 3 classes right now plus 40 hours at work, so I haven't really been sleeping a lot and I have been working non stop. I hardly have seen connor, except last night when he managed to fall in the toilet... its all really getting to me now.
So if I seem a little distant/and or moody, please ignore it :)
Good luck Start! Im hoping things work out well for the boys

Try a consignment shop, Al. There's usually nice clothing, for MUCH cheaper than you pay new, and there are some that cater to maternity clothing.
The other option is to wear a suit jacket you own open, over a maternity top, and just buy a matching pair of maternity pants or skirt!

Thanks!! I hadn't thought of that... I tried our local maternity/baby stuff consignment shop for one, and they didn't have anything... but I may be able to pull something off by mixing the two.

Oh, I have tasers of all colors, which color would you ladies prefer.
Oh, yeah, I have been tasered, last week, not that bad really.
