    Thank You Note
My son is writing his High School Graduation thank you notes. He is a boy of few words:)
Almost all of his gifts were cards with money enclosed and he is planning to put all toward a laptop for college. In each of his notes he has thanked them for using the specific amount they have given him and then told them he is putting it toward the computer he is planning on purchasing. A friend of mine told me it is not proper to use the amount of money in a thank you note. Is that correct? She said her mother taught her that. We want to know if that is true or something her mom just taught her. He wanted to make sure they knew he knew exactly what they had given him and that he was paying attention and truly appreciative.
Please let us know what the real rule is.
    Thank you

When I graduated from high school and wrote my thank you notes, my Mother told me to include the dollar amount I received in the thank you. Especially for her side of the family, where somehow that really mattered to her sisters and brothers. Maybe it was to confirm to my Aunts and Uncles that I did not confuse their $25.00 with someone else's $20.00.

Go with how you feel. Congratulations to your son for writing his thank you cards. Writing thank you's is becoming a lost art.

    Thank you
I am still waiting on thank you cards form 4 years ago so the fact he is writing is great and acknowledging the amount would not offend me especially if I sent cash I would know he got the amount I sent!

I believe the amount is okay to add, as you always want to mention the specific gift to avoid it reading like a form letter. Since it's cash, the amount would be the only specific I can think of!

I side with your friend who said not to mention the amount. Rather, I would say something like,

"I want to thank you for being with me to celebrate my graduation. I hope you enjoyed the party. Thank you, also, for the nice card. I've used your generous gift toward a laptop computer, which I know I will use every day."

I would suggest the same thing, I was always told never to include the amount.
