    Terminating Parental Rights
I have an eight year old daughter who lives with me in Pennsylvania and her father lives in Oklahoma. He has only seen her once (for 24 hours) in the past 2 years. He is currently taking the steps to becoming a Police Officer and moving to Las Vegas. I adopted her when she was 3 days old and when I married, my now ex adopted her. I asked him last week if he is planning on seeing her this summer and he said IT DOES NOT FIT INTO HIS TIME SCHEDULE!! He has two other children in Oklahoma, which he left his ex wife's new husband adopt is oldest child a few years ago. He really only spends time with his 10 year old daughter. I talked to a lawyer a few years ago, and he said the only way a parent can give up rights is if the other parent gets remarried and the new spouse wants to adopt the child. Is this true... must I remarry just to have my ex terminate his rights?

First this works two ways, he can have all the rights he wants, but you can't force him to use them, if he does not want to visit, he doesnot have ot, if he does not have to say anything about their life.
And he can file in court to give those rights away anytime he wants to.
And normally the court will allow him to.

But then he has his legal obligation, this is child support and insurnce for the child if that is in the support order, he can not give that up, unless the other spouse marries and has a spouse that will adopt the child to take his obligatoin.

So he does not want to see the child or visit, nothing you can do, but he will have to pay support nothing can stop that besides someone else adopting the child. As a new step parent.

But it is silly to just give up rights, since it means nothing if the person does not want to visit anyway.
