    Terminating Parental Rights
I live in Wisconsin and I have a 5 month old son, and am no longer involved with the Father. He has said on and off since the time I was pregnant, that he wanted to sign off his rights. Then he would say he wanted to be involved, get mad, say he wants to sign off etc. He was seeing our son every 10-14 days, but now has not made an effort to see him in 6 weeks. Last I spoke to him I told him I wanted to change our son's last name (I gave his to him) and he said he would only sign it if I let him sign off his rights. Most of the research I have done says that generally the Judge won't allow it unless the Mother is married and someone else wants to adopt. However, recently I have heard 2 stories where the father was allowed to sign off his rights. I do not receive any government support, and have never requested child support. The only thing he does is have our son on his insurance at my request. For this, I would acquire insurance and pay for that on my own. I am wondering if anyone else has any experience in this type of situation and what the chances are that a judge would allow him to sign off his rights? I have decided that if he wants to sign his rights off, that is fine with me. I will never need any financial support from him. I am contacting an attorney hopefully tomorrow, but am wondering what other peoples experience has been. Thank you.

He can sign away he's rights at any time but that will not (most likely) save him from being finacially responsible.

Signing over his "rights" has nothing to do with his responsibility to pay child support, that is totally a different issue. His Rights are visitation, custody, being able to decide isssues in the child's life.

Child support is a obligation, and no, he will have to always pay child support unless you havve a new partner that is willing to adopt.

And sorry but the child support is not yours to give away either, it is the child's money and you are doing everyone a dis-service not getting your child's money and at least putting it in the bank for the child.

The court will not allow him to sign away his obligation, so it is not worth the cost trying, what you need to do is restrict his visitation, and make him pay what he is suppose to pay.
