Hey there,
So back in December my friend and I rented a 3 bedroom together. Shortly after my dog became ill and having many vet bills, I asked john, my room mate if he would consider sharing the third room (third roommate) to split the rent making it cheaper for all of is. It worked out very well, we had a lovely girl move in that quickly became our friend. It has been four months since this incident and all of a sudden john is asking me for extra money for January rent which was paid by the new roommate. He;s stating that I did not pay my way and he is in a financial hole because of this which is not true as he paid no more than he would have had we not gotten a third roommate. I did all of the math and I am certain he paid no more than he was expected to. He has started to harass me by harass me about these matters and leaving aggressive notes for our third roommate to see. I don't want our room mate to feel uncomfortable with our situation. I am a very calm and positive person, I volunteer a lot and pride myself on having a good heart, maybe he sees me as an easy target and he knows it is not in my nature to initiate revenge. On top of everything else, he never cleans anything and leaves food all over, I spend two or more hours a week just cleaning up his mess. We live in NYC and the food issue is an invitation for bugs. I'm not sure how to deal with him, I don't want to move as my rent is harass and I need to focus on school, my job and my roommate is very pleasant, also the house in convenient to my boyfriend.

How would you deal with this guy? What should I do to get him to realize the truth?

Who's names are on the lease? Do you have a sharing agreement in writing?

It is easy, on a piece of paper write down the rent, divide it by three if there are three of you, divide it by two if there are two of you and that is how much each pays,

If one wants another to pay more, make them show you why on paper.

If he claims to have paid more than his share ask him to show his cancelled checks to you.

If you have paid your share, show yours to him.

It's not hard.
