    Giving up parental rights
Hey I have a friend who want to give up his parental rights, but he's not understanding if the child will have to go to another family even though the child's mother still has her rights? Or do someone have to step in the place example one of her family or friends... and also would the father still have to pay child support even though he gave his rights up? And also who do you go to, to have your rights terminated. That's all my questions thanks for your time to anyone who can answer

Yes you still have to pay child support. No one has to step up and replace him. The child will stay with the mother unless she is unfit and the government takes the child away.. just curious, why would he want to? He may decide later in life to be a part of his child's life, as he matures, and will not be able to do so. He will have to pay child support regardless, so why not keep parental rights.

He would have to go to a lawyer to relinquish his rights, and it would have to be approved by a judge.

He would still have to pay child support (it's not that easy to get out of that---if it were, don't you think the men sitting in jail for not paying would have just given them up?) unless the mother remarries and her new husband wishes to adopt.

Signing away his right is not signing away hers, so essentially, he'd just be saying that she could raise the child with no visitation from him, no input from him, while still receiving child support from him. Sounds pretty dumb, huh?

My suggestion is that he get a lawyer and work on building a relationship with his kid.

Unless the other parent has a partner or new spouse all you give up is your right to visit, and your right to have any say in the child's life.
( so why in the world would you give something up that you don't have to use anyway)

And of course giving up rights does not stop the obligation to pay child support, it merely means you pay but have no say.
