What's the easist way to remove a Quest stop valve without damaging the copper pipe?

I'd like to get rid of the old Quest PB stop valves in my bathrooms. Is there an easy way to get the ring off? Mine have what looks like stainless steel rings that keep the nut from sliding off the copper. Did one with brute force but there's got to be a better way.

I have a continuous leak in my shower from my washer being bad, I have the hot and cold knob off and I have the clip holding stem in place removed. I bought tool to remove stem but it is not coming off. Can you please give me any suggestion?
