Tub drain with trip lever

The plunger in the trip lever asembly is frozen in the closed position. Is there anything e.g.. vinegar,Liquid Plumber etc. I can pour into the overflow pipe to remove corrision thus allowing the plunger to move freely and/or be removed?

I need to replace the rod and bucket for my brass trip drain on the tub. The problem is that the normal replacement "bucket" is too large. My old one measures about 1.25 inches.
