Means very little about the guy, because neither you or your friends can know what he is looking at (Or THINKING) when you are not watching him. Your friends think he is a nice guy, and that's a plus but not etched in stone. I mean
how well do they know him, and how? Could be the case they only know about as much as you do?
why do I feel that tightness in my chest when I see him somewhere unexpectedly?
I really don't know why, but we all have similar emotional reactions that affects us when we encounter the objects of a crush/attraction. Such things are natural to humans and just another part of ourselves to learn to deal with.
In time you will learn to understand YOUR feelings, and how to best DEAL with them. Be great to have boundaries of good behavior to guide you through this learning experience about how guys affect YOU, and YOUR feelings.
Possibly this nice guy who catches your eyes is as unsure and inexperienced as you are, but you can help you both by smiling and saying HI, and see what happens after that. It's
normal and scary to wonder how our crush/attraction feels about us, and really scary when it's the first most intense experience of this kind.
It's also a big thrill too, right? Just use your own good sense to explore and experiment with this situation cautiously, and safely.
