Shower drain fix - what to do after I remove the lead oakum?
We had a leak in the bathroom and discovered it is the shower drain. I went to replace it and have discovered it is an old drain that doesn't look like it will be fixed with a normal fix. On top of the fact that I don't have access underneath and want to avoid pulling up the pan. I know I need to remove the lead & oakum but after that what do? Do I try to remove the copper ring around the outside on the shower pan and install a new one?

    Image is attached below.

    Thank you for any advice!

I think I agree with the recommendation you received at Terry Love plumbing. This is probably beyond the capabilities of the DIY.

    However,
We had a leak in the bathroom and discovered it is the shower drain.
How do you know that? It is not enough to know that the drain is leaking, you must know where and why before you can fix it.
old drain that doesn't look like it will be fixed with a normal fix.
That much I will agree with.
I don't have access underneath and want to avoid pulling up the pan.
Unless the leak is occurring around the drain flange, that is not possible.

Do I try to remove the copper ring around the outside on the shower pan and install a new one?
Only if that is where the leak is occurring.

Repair oakum and lead joint [ 1 Answers ]

Hopefully this makes sense. I can take pictures if needed. My 50+ year old cast iron flange appears to be joined to my cast iron drain (4" I think) on the outside (pipe inside) by a oakum and lead joint. While removing the old wax ring I noticed that a 1/2" chip of the oakum/lead ring came...
