I have a GE CarryCool I bought in 1983 and gave good
Service until last year when it started putting water
In the 5 inch gap in the window sill between the inner
And outer windows. I like the CarryCool because it has
A handle that makes it easier for a old lady like me to
Lift to the window and it has accordion side panels
That are adjustable to the window size. I've been
Trying to find advice on my situation. Most indicate
That the problem might be a blocked drain hole. I
Looked for a hole on it and can't find any (see photo
Of the bottom of this unit). I also noticed that the
Left side accordion panel is cracked and was wondering
If this could have contributed to the condensation
Problem. I have another problem to consider in whether
To buy a new unit - my house was built in 1897 and the
Wiring was probably installed in the 1920s or 30s and
There are no grounded outlets which new air
Conditioners seem to require. Some people say I should
Get a "portable" unit, but I hear they are not as
Efficient and draw even more power than a window unit.
I only need a 6000 BTU unit. Now should I invest in a
New appliance, if so what type or get the old clunker

At this point, get a new one. The SEER levels are much higher and you can get a 6K BTU unit for $100 or so.

This AC unit throws the condensate water onto the condenser coils to increase the efficiency. All you need to do to make it work like new is to clean it thoroughly with coil cleaner and a water hose. It's extremely dirty right now and must be cleaned at least once a year and in Florida, twice a year. Take off the cover then take off the covers that are on top of the coils, especially the indoor coils. Spray both sides of the coils with alkaline coil cleaner available at any HVAC parts store. Then wash it out with a spray nozzle on a water hose. You will have to turn it on its side to dump the water. Don't worry, it will not hurt it at all; it's made for it. Just make sure to clean the drain hole at the bottom of the indoor coil drain pan. It's usually just an indentation at the back of a Styrofoam pan. You may want to bleach it to kill any mold. Wear eye, hand, and breathing protection when cleaning the AC unit. That means to wear rubber gloves, a dust mask, and a face shield. Coil cleaner will eat you up. You can also use Easy-Off oven cleaner, the alkaline kind that foams. It has sodium hydroxide in it.
