    4 wire 3 speed fan switch hook up
    For a 4 wire 3 speed fan, the correct way to hook up is;
    L Black
    1 to Gray
    2 to Brown
    3 to Purple

    I made a mistake and hooked up;
    2 to Purple
    3 to Brown

    Fan seems to work is this OK?

    It may make your fan speeds not be sequential. For example it may be Low, High, Medium as you pull the chain. Other than that it's fine.
