Rosh Hashanah is the new year ,but it's also a day of judgement . The Talmud states that there are three possible verdicts for this day... ( inscribed )in the book of life, the book of death, or the book of pending . The greeting is actually May you be inscribed and sealed in the book of life for a good year.
That's at least my rudimentary understanding of the greeting .

    Hello tom:

Thanks for your good wishes.. I don't have a shofar to blow, and I can't afford the tickets to attend services.. Or, let me rephrase that.. I REFUSE to buy tickets to attend services..

So, I blew a joint instead..
