We just bought a 2001 3500 one ton diesel truck. It heats up going up hills with the 5th wheel attached. When its hot you can touch the radiator and it is not over hot nor does it overflow. We had the radiator flushed and a new thermostat put in. same problem. Any sugestions

Due to cavitation, it's extremely important to take proper care of a diesel engine's cooling system. Use only a 50/50 mixture of recommended antifreeze and distilled water. Be sure and add the necessary supplemental cooling additive (SCA), when changing coolant, and check/add additional SCA every 6 months. Change coolant every 2 to 3 years, depending on use. Check for possible blockage in the radiator, due to corrosion or mineral buildup. You may need to have the radiator rodded or replaced.

Use an infrared (IR) thermometer on the radiator. Also, you can verify that the lower radiator hose is much cooler than the top radiator hose, when the engine is at normal operating temperature.

If it does as you say, " not over hot or overflow ", it might be the gauge or sending unit. Pulling a 5th wheel up hills is no easy task. I would try the same thing without the trailer -what happens?
