    My dog is Sick
My dog is sick. He was bleeding from - I thought it was his mouth - I thought he lost a tooth. Told everyone to stop giving him hard dog biscuits. Then I realized he was bleeding from his penis. I took him to the vet. They took blood work. His red and white blood cell counts were extremely low. The vet likened it to an Aids patient.

He was placed on Orbax (an antibiotic) and Pregnizone. His urine in the beginning had crystals in it and it was very dark almost brown with blood in his urine.

He seemed to get better each day. After the Orbax was finished I took in a urine sample again. Everything looked really good and the indicators were for a bacterial infection. They put him back on Orbax again because sometimes it will come back worse so he is on his second round of Orbax.

He started exhibiting puzzling symptoms yesterday. He was walking very stiff legged and putting his paws down on the ground like he was walking on something very painful. His bowels have changed. He went from 2 healthy plops to a very tiny little bit. Is he constipated? The most dramatic change was in the middle of the night he yelped as if in pain.

Did I mention I did not give him his nightly dose of pregnizone? Due to his symptoms I waited until morning to check with the vet.

I was advised to continue the medicines as prescribed even with his symptoms. It was mentioned that perhaps his blood counts went even lower and he mite need a 24 emergency clinic to give him a blood transfusion?

Does anyone out there have any help to offer? Should I seek another vet's opinion? What exactly mite be going on?

I think you mean prednisone and if so you should never discontinue dose from prescribed time.

Are your pet's gums white? If so you may need a second opinion because a blood transfusion is not a permanent fix.

What was his actual diagnosis? I think you should get him to the emergency vet if you haven't already.
The stiff legs and walking as if in pain may indicate an electrolyte imbalance which will not only affect muscle activity but organ function also.
Or it could be that much needed oxygen is not being carried to muscle and brain tissue because of the anemia.
I'm just guessing here, but it's best to get him tended to before the weekend is over.
I wish you the best, let us know how he does.
