Coversion of AO Smith Water Heater Model GPVL 50 200
In April I purchased and had installed a new water heater. We are now getting natural gas. One plumber told me that the heater can not be converted and wants me to purchase a new one. The original plumber tells me that it can be converted, but I need to get the conversion kit. When I called the company and gave them the serial number 1310AO16475 they advised there is no conversion kit. So who's telling the truth?

I suggest that you call the gas company and ask if they can convert the water heater to natural gas.

they advised there is no conversion kit.
I suggest that means that they don't sell a kit and not necessarily that it cannot be converted.

You simply need a natural gas type gas valve and you may need to adjust the pilot light to match the decreased pressure of natural gas. The orifice will need to be made a little larger which is done with a kit of little drills you insert in orifice to make it bigger. It's all very simple. In the mornings and sometimes when the water has not been used for a while, when you turn on the faucet it "spits" at you. Is there air getting in the line from the pressure tank? Would correcting the pressure in the tank fix this? Any suggestions?
