    Convert remote fan control to 3 speed switch
    Casa vieja fan remote controlled.want to convert it to 3 speed switch.fan is about 10 yrs old.4 wires coming from fan winding,yellow,purple,red and brown.Can only get ohms readings across yellow to red and purple to brown.Brown and red connect to start capactor. After trying all combinations,could not determine which was ground and which were speed leads.can it be done?

I have a Hampton Bay remote control fan, it goes at 1/2 speed in full and medium and does not go at all in slow. The forward/reverse arrow on the remote LCD indicates the opposite direction the fan is moving.
